Maggie's Story
maggie

Maggie is a six year old lab cross that was given up to the Northumberland Humane Society recently because her owners could no longer afford her treatment.

Maggie is a spayed female weighing about 70 pounds and as you'll see in the photos she is in pretty rough shape.  The following is the story of Maggie's transformation from a sad, neglected dog to a happy, healthy dog.

The Call

Theresa Rickerby of All Creatures Great and Small, in Cobourg, called me on March 10th and asked if I'd sponsor this girl with donations of a raw food diet. Theresa felt this sweet girl was so deserving of a quality, healthy life and asked if I'd be willing to help.

We're going to follow the transformation of Maggie as she waits for her new forever home at the Humane Society. Maggie will be fed raw food exclusively, which will be a far cry from her previous diet of a rather low quality kibble.

Just before she was brought to the Humane Society, her owners were advised that Maggie needed a hypoallergenic diet. Apparently that was more than this family could bear, with the already mounting veterinary bills and the increasing dosages of cortisone.

Maggie is very good with children, cats and other dogs. Despite her appearance, she does love to play and has a wonderful temperament.

A Raw Diet is Introduced

Maggie is progressing well on her new diet. She took about half an hour to decide to eat her first meal of raw foods; but when she did, she dug in with gusto and has been eating without hesitation since.

Initially she had no loose stools but on March 16th, she did have a pretty good diarrhea blow out (sorry to be graphic, but at least I didn't post the pictures). She was still her playful self and fine in every other way, but for whatever reason her body needed to expel her dinner and quickly.

The red inflammation has subsided, so it looks like there is no fresh irritations. She does scratch a little, but it's nothing like the constant scratching she did when she first came to the Humane Society.

We also have chosen some herbal support for Maggie and she has been started on those and some flower essences to help with her transition and recovery.

Detox Begins to Show

As was expected, Maggie has started to detoxify through her eyes and they are goopy and green. She also is expelling yeast from her ears. With six years of antibiotics and cortizone suppressing her body's ability to expel toxins, it was bound to come out, once it was given the chance. We will not be using any suppressive drugs to mask these symptoms. Rather just keeping her eyes and ears clear with a herbal wash.

Otherwise she is doing well, her attitude is good and she loves the food. She has been whining when pooping though, which would indicate constipation. So we're cutting back on the bones and we are sending her digestive enzymes tomorrow. She has been given pretty much just chicken and vegetable blend and beef with vegetable blend as well as beef recreational bones. We sent along plenty of bones, to help ease her boredom, but we think the bone content might be just a little too much for a dog with limited activity. So this week we'll up the muscle meat diets, maybe introduce some lamb and vegetable blend and reduce the chicken variety.

I've posted the picture of Maggie's weepy eyes, as I posted in the beginning, we'll give you the good, the bad and the ugly.

I've also posted a nice picture of Maggie, so you can also see the sweet girl that she is.

And if I'm not mistaken this picture of her right side looks improved from the original right side picture. It looks like she's even gotten some hair growth in the last two weeks as the darker "elephant" skin looks smaller.
Looking forward to further improvements ...

Progressing Well

Maggie seems to have a few little sores breaking out on her here and there. We’ve been keeping after her ear with the apple cider vinegar and water, and there is marked improvement. Stools are excellent. Eyes still a bit goopy but better. She is taking Fasttrack enzymes with each meal now.

As for hair loss, it seems like she's lost some in some areas and grown a bit in others. All in all things appear to be progressing normally. We've included a nice picture of her with one of the cats, just to show what a nice dog she is.

Maggie's Appetite Grows

Maggie seems ravenous for food, and she does appear to have lost some weight (which I'm not sure she needed), so we've increased her intake to 2 pounds per day (she was eating 1.5 pounds of food per day).

She's a bit out of sorts lately, won't go for walks with anyone but Lynne (the caregiver at the Humane Society). So Lynne has been purposely distancing herself a bit from Maggie and getting lots of other people out to play with her and walk her (or trying to).

Her ear is hugely improved, she does still scratch but not quite as much. As for hair growth, she is loosing some more in places but there seems to be a bit of regrowth in others. She gets the enzymes, herbal powder and essences every day. So all in all, things are about as they should be a month into this project. No problems at all with stools anymore, which is great.

I've posted a picture of Maggie showing her left side. We've not seen her left side before, but it will be a good reference to compare it to when we start seeing more hair growth.

She always looks so miserable in these pictures, she's really not miserable at all, I think the camera makes her uncomfortable.
