Maggie is a six year old lab cross that was given up to the Northumberland Humane Society recently because her owners could no longer afford her treatment. Maggie is a spayed female weighing about 70 pounds and as you'll see in the photos she is in pretty rough shape. The following is the story of Maggie's transformation from a sad, neglected dog to a happy, healthy dog.

| There isn't really a whole lot of change since last week. The Humane Society is giving her extra food, which seems to have made her a bit more relaxed. She goes off happily for walks now with the co-op student Justine. Stools and everything else seem fine, her ear is a bit more sensitive today then it has been, she whined as it was cleaned, but it still looks a lot better then it did (although she does have an open wound on the tip of the left ear). Apart from this, there's not a whole lot more to report. We've posted a picture of Maggie's face, which looks like there is a pretty good start to hair regrowth. Look around her eyes compared to the initial picture. As well as the right side picture, the patch of darkened skin seems to be getting smaller. We were anticipating six weeks before we see some changes and it looks like we're on track. Imagine what another five weeks will bring! | | | | Maggie on March 17th | Maggie on April 14th |

Things are really starting to progress. We're posting a close up of her right side so you can see how the hair is really coming back. The same holds true with her front legs, the fur is really filling in nicely. In the picture of her face, you can see the area around her eyes is looking a lot better. She is in pretty good spirits, she's sure looking happier these days. We are all so very encouraged with how well she's progressing. There will undoubtably be times during the year that she may have flare ups, but this is the start of progress. | | | | Maggie on March 24th | Maggie on April 21st |

Get ready to be blown away by the improvements over the last three weeks! It is really remarkable the changes we are seeing -- her itching still flairs up a bit when she's nervous, otherwise it's just her ear that seems the most irritated. We've switched to the Prescribed Animal Wellness ear wash for her ears. She seems to tolerate it a bit better, but still hates having it cleaned. However, the ear does look vastly improved. Lynne says that Maggie really enjoys the food and loves the bones too. We've been sending plenty of recreational bones weekly to help with stress and boredom. Hair is continuing to fill in nicely under her tail, along the sides and on her legs. She is doing really well, as you can see in these photos! | | | | Maggie on April 7th | Maggie on April 29th |

The red, inflamed skin has all disappeared, she has no more of that visibly irritated skin. The hair growth has become rapid, and frankly is coming along better than expected for this far along in her recovery period. She has a new (dog) friend Teela that she enjoys playing with. Her attitude is very happy and playful and her appetite has remained very healthy. I think much of the calories and nutrition is going into recovery as she's eating a healthy amount of food per day. More than the average six year old lab cross. | | | | Left side, Maggie March 11 | Left side, Maggie May 06 | Above is a picture of her left side taken May 6th, along with a picture of the same side from March 11th. You can really see the transformation when the pictures are paired together. We've also included a picture of her legs taken at the same dates at the left side pictures. The red inflammation is noticeably improved! | | | | Maggie Legs March 11 | Maggie Legs May 06 | |

... Holy cow, look at this Maggie Pic! The improvements with Maggie's coat condition in the past few weeks is nothing short of remarkable. And I'll be honest, I didn't think she'd do this well! And certainly not after only ten weeks! I thought it would take months for her to look this good. She's still on the lean side so we are cutting back on the herbal supplements as they may be speeding up her metabolism. As mentioned a few weeks ago, she's getting two pounds of food per day, which is more the portion size for a 95 pound dog. The Humane Society feels Maggie is ready for her forever home. Problem is we don't have one for her yet. I'm going to highlight her in the months to come in the hopes someone falls in love with her. She has such a great attitude, she's been a real trooper and only once did her spirits get a bit down. But that was probably just the adjustment of her new situation. What a beautiful, loving face she has and a fun zest for life! I just love looking at that face shot of her from April 21st! | | | | Left side, Maggie March 24 | Left side, Maggie May 14 | Posted are Maggie's left side on March 24th and Maggie's left side on May 14th. And I swear, it is the same dog! | | | Maggie's Elbow - Before | Maggie's Elbow - Now! | In the May 14th picture, you can even see hair growth on her elbows. Many people always comment that their dog's have bald elbows from laying on hard surfaces. I'll tell you, Maggie's not laying on the living room couch all day, and there is some serious regrowth on her elbows. Without getting too preachy, I believe we pet owners have been sold a bill of goods when it comes to what to expect from a healthy pet -- I was one of them as well. And the only way to know what I'm talking about is to actually try including some real food (and preferably raw) into your pet's diet. You won't look back, I promise you that! |
